In a crowded marketplace, Churchill Knight Umbrella has always prioritised compliance and customer service. Therefore, since the day we launched, we made it our mission to become FCSA accredited.
The FCSA (Freelancer and Contractor Services Association) is the UK’s leading professional body that self-regulates the contractor payroll marketplace. With over 500 umbrella companies in the UK, picking a compliant one can be challenging. However, the FCSA’s accreditation has helped compliance-driven umbrella companies stand out from the competition.
To earn FCSA accreditation, umbrella companies must undergo a series of audits and assessments. All the umbrella’s processes and procedures are reviewed to ensure they comply with the highest standards, and no stone is left unturned. For an umbrella to become a member of the FCSA, it must abide by the FCSA’s strict Codes of Compliance, which are available to view online.

Every year, we are required to undergo an annual review to ensure that we remain compliant with UK tax law and continue to operate in accordance with the FCSA’s Codes of Compliance. Since we first earned our FCSA membership, we have successfully passed every annual audit to date.
When searching for a trustworthy umbrella company, a good place to look is the FCSA’s list of accredited members. Each of these umbrella companies have successfully prove they value compliance and operate ethically within the contractor payroll sector. As a UK worker, you are responsible for paying the correct taxes and National Insurance Contributions (NIC). Therefore, it’s essential you use compliant payroll providers, because engaging with a non-compliant business, even by mistake, could land you a serious penalty from HMRC.
Responsible recruitment agencies will have an up-to-date and well-vetted Preferred Supplier List (PSL) – a list of umbrella companies they have approved for you to use when working on temporary assignments. However, if you would prefer to use a company that isn’t on the agency’s PSL, make sure the umbrella is an FCSA accredited member. More and more UK-based recruitment agencies are prioritising FCSA-accredited umbrellas on their PSLs. Therefore, just because an FCSA accredited umbrella isn’t on an agency’s PSL at the moment, they may consider adding it for you if you reach out to them.
The FCSA’s website states:
“Recognised as the industry’s compliance gold standard for umbrella employers, limited company advisors, and self-employed and CIS contractor providers; recruitment agencies can reduce risk by committing to a PSL comprising exclusively of fully compliant and transparent FCSA Accredited Members.”
