If you are unhappy with your current umbrella company, it is easy to change umbrella companies and find a provider you will be happy with. There are a few simple steps to notify your current provider that you are leaving and change umbrella companies.
Why should you change umbrella companies?
There are several reasons why you may want to change umbrella companies, and these include:
- The FCSA or SafeRec does not accredit the umbrella company.
- The umbrella company does not include any extras you could benefit from or would like included in your service, such as an employee discount scheme, a salary sacrifice service, or a comprehensive insurance package.
- The quality of service does not meet your expectations, or you may have had a poor experience with the umbrella company.
- The umbrella company does not reply to phone calls or emails promptly.
- You are paid late, or there are problems with your payments.
- A friend or colleague has recommended a different umbrella company to you.
- Other umbrella companies have a more competitive margin.
- You suspect the umbrella company is non-compliant and is possibly a tax avoidance scheme.
- The umbrella company is under investigation and has been assigned a Scheme Reference Number (SRN) by HMRC.
- Your recruitment agency or end client does not work with the umbrella company and would prefer you to use a provider on their Preferred Supplier List.
Is it easy to change umbrella companies?
It’s easy to change umbrella companies, and we’ve created a simple step-by-step guide for you to follow.
- Choose your new umbrella company – If you change umbrella companies, you must only switch to a compliant provider. Using a non-compliant provider could land you in serious trouble with HMRC, and you could owe thousands of pounds in unpaid tax – which you will be required to pay back!
- Register with the new umbrella company – You need to register with your new umbrella company and provide important information such as your assignment details, end client or agency information and personal details. You will also need to submit documents such as your proof of identity and right to work, sign a contract of employment and send your most recent P45. If you do not have a P45, you can complete a starter checklist for PAYE.
- Notify your current umbrella company of your intention to leave – Once your final payment has been made, you must request your P45 and give it to your new umbrella company.
- Your new umbrella company will contact your recruitment agency/end client –Once you have registered with your new umbrella company, they will contact your recruitment agency or end client and let them know you have registered.
- You have now registered with your new umbrella company – Once you have registered with your new umbrella company, there will be very little ongoing administration. Depending on your recruitment agency or end client, you may be required to submit a timesheet to the umbrella company each week/month. However, not all agencies/end clients require this.
