As an HGV or van driver, it is important that you only use umbrella companies that offer driver negligence insurance. Drivers’ negligence insurance is not only a standard contractual requirement but also provides cover against claims in respect of accidental damage caused to your client’s vehicle.
What is driver’s negligence insurance?
Drivers negligence insurance is not a standalone policy; umbrella companies offer driver negligence insurance to HGV or van drivers as an extension to the Public Liability, Professional Indemnity, and Employers Liability insurance cover they already offer as standard. It provides accidental damage cover to the end clients vehicle which is being driven by the contractor as part of the supply agreement between the end client and recruitment agency.
For example, if a contractor causes accidental damage to the end client’s vehicle while driving it by scraping the paintwork or hitting a bollard, the driver could be held negligent under the supplier agreement, and the recruitment firm would need to claim under their driver’s negligence policy. The driver’s negligence insurance would be used to contribute to the cost of repairing the damaged vehicle. Driver’s negligence insurance does not cover third-party injury or damage to vehicles or property due to road traffic accidents.
Do umbrella companies offer drivers negligence insurance?
As a HGV or van driver, you may wonder if umbrella companies offer drivers negligence insurance—and the answer is yes. However, it is important to mention that not all umbrella companies provide it as part of the service, and you will need to find an umbrella company that specialises in providing employment to drivers in the UK (please see our umbrella company for drivers service).
You will require driver’s negligence insurance if you’re a driver working directly with an end client or with an agency. This is designed to protect you against accidental damage caused when driving your client’s vehicle. The level of insurance you will be offered will depend on the provider, and it is important that the level of coverage is sufficient for your contract and that you and your end client are happy with the level and type of insurance offered.
