Umbrella companies are more straightforward than you may think...
Using an umbrella company is the easiest way to get paid as a contractor. When you register, you become an umbrella company employee, and they will process the payment for the work completed for your end client – ensuring the correct tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs) are paid to HMRC on your behalf. All you will need to do throughout your time with an umbrella company is ensure you correctly submit the hours you have worked if your agency or end client requires you to do so. Churchill Knight Umbrella has partnered with My Digital, a leading provider of umbrella company software. My Digital allows all our employees to easily submit their hours and view payslips online or by downloading the free and easy-to-use mobile app.
If you choose Churchill Knight Umbrella as your payroll provider, you will have access to a host of exciting benefits, including our dedicated Onboarding and Umbrella Customer Service Teams, Same-Day Faster Payments, and, if you choose to add it to your service, Churchill Knight Rewards.
How does an umbrella company work? A step by step guide
Here is a breakdown summarizing the roles of you (the contractor), us (Churchill Knight Umbrella), your recruitment agency and your client:
- Call us on 01707 871622 and let us know if you want to sign up with Churchill Knight Umbrella. Alternatively, you can complete our online registration form, and we’ll call you back to complete the sign-up process.
- Your recruitment agency or client will enter into an agreement with Churchill Knight Umbrella, and each will sign a contract agreeing to the terms of the business relationship.
- You will receive a welcome email once you’ve officially registered with Churchill Knight Umbrella. The welcome email will explain the next steps to ensure you get set up and ready to be paid.
- To ensure the umbrella company can pay you, you must provide the following documents: a signed contract of employment, a copy of a P45 or completed Starter Checklist for PAYE, and proof of your identity and right to work in the UK.
- When working for your client, you may be required to submit the hours you have worked to Churchill Knight Umbrella using the My Digital portal or mobile app. You will be sent login information when you register. Not all recruitment agencies or clients require you to submit a timesheet to the umbrella company. However, if this is the case, you may still be required to submit one to your agency or client.
- Once your timesheets have been approved, Churchill Knight Umbrella will invoice your agency or client accordingly.
- Your recruitment agency or client will arrange payment according to the terms and conditions outlined in the agency assignment (also referred to as the assignment schedule).
- Your agency or client will send the funds to Churchill Knight Umbrella for the hours you’ve worked.
- Churchill Knight Umbrella will process the payment from your recruitment agency or client and make the relevant tax deductions.
- The net payment will be paid from Churchill Knight Umbrella, and your payslip will be available via My Digital.
- Every time you receive a payment from Churchill Knight Umbrella, you will receive a payslip audit report from Payslip Buddy (emailed to you). The report will provide you with a thorough insight into your payslip – allowing you to see that we are paying you compliantly and correctly. Payslip Buddy (powered by SafeRec) is completely free of charge for all Churchill Knight Umbrella employees, and you can log in to your Payslip Buddy account whenever you want to check your payslips.
